Shetek Area Lakes Association (SALA) represents all of Lake Shetek and the surrounding communies that are 
located in the Des Moines headwaters and watershed.

The Des Moines river rises in Lake Shetek in southwestern Minnesota, near Pipestone, and flows 525 miles in a southeasterly direction to join the Mississippi River 2 miles southwest of Keokuk, Iowa. Above Humboldt, Iowa, the river is known as the West Fork.

The Des Moines, East Fork Des Moines, and Lower Des Moines drain a total of 1,559 square miles in seven Minnesota counties (Cottonwood, Jackson, Martin, Murray, Nobles, Lyon, and Pipestone).

Intensive agricultural land use has drastically changed the landscape and the water quality of these watersheds. Only a small percentage of land is undeveloped forest and wetlands and only 1% is open water (lakes, rivers, streams, ditches).

Lake Shetek is the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota, United States, and the headwaters of the Des Moines River. It is located in The Lakes, an unincorporated community in Murray County a few miles north-northwest of Currie. The name Shetek is derived from “pelican” in the Ojibwe language.
